Gillian’s Closet – Design

The continuing closet saga for me and my daughter…

Design was very important to both of us. A tilt out hamper was a must for me.  The Synergy Tilt hamper with 2 canvas bags worked perfectly for her by giving her the ability to sort her laundry and a removable canvas bag should could carry to the laundry room.  Momma didn’t want any excuses as to why her dirty clothes were lying on the floor of her room or closet.

She had a lot of shelves in her old closet, but struggled with keeping things neatly folded and ON THE SHELVES.  The shelves in her existing closet were not adjustable and there weren’t enough of them to fully utilize the space.  A combination of drawers and open shelving was a must.  The beauty of a custom closet system is that the system is adjustable.  With a builder grade system there is no adjustability—you are stuck with whatever type of shelves they provide and wherever they place the shelves.

The other big problem is the end wall had no shelves so we had to stack things on the top shelf and utilize an area setup for double hanging for large items.  She also had nowhere to put her shoes except for the floor, so we wanted some shelving for shoes.

Another important consideration was that the center shelving unit in her old closet went to the floor so the carpet was installed up to that spot.  We had to make sure we went with a 16” deep system that was floor based to deal with the carpet we had.  So to not limit ourselves in the design, we decided to make the entire system floor based instead of a combination of floor and wall hung.  This allowed us the freedom to place hanging, shelves, drawers wherever we wanted to instead of just placing a floor based unit where the old shelving was located.  There are challenges to every space and even our very own job was no exception.
