Hanger Hangup

Gina's favorite hanger wrapped in lavendar and yellow materialDo you remember the scene from Mommy Dearest about the wire hangers? Probably the most memorable scene, centered around a hanger, ever created! I bring this up because just recently my husband decided that he hates all of our plastic hangers. Don’t misunderstand me, he didn’t get angry about it but it was funny to watch the day evolve around the hanger.

He has decided he hates the type of hangers with the various notches for tank tops or hooks so you can hang 2 items together. He informs me that these plastic hangers are a huge annoyance because his shirts catch on these notches and hooks and make it difficult to remove his shirts.  He says “They all must go!” and he sets off to get some new hangers, the kind HE approves of.

He returns home after a trip to Wal-Mart with these super thick, white plastic hangers that have no notches or hooks.  They seem a little overkill for most of the things in his closet, but I want to see where this is going.  He started out with 3 packages of these hangers, having no idea how many shirts he has.  This led to another trip to Wal-Mart for another 3 packages which was just enough to do all his shirts.  Just recently he came home with another 2 packages because he has some new shirts that needed to be hung up.  I think it’s so funny that he now has to have a plentiful supply of hangers available in case his wardrobe increases.  Heaven forbid there is an unmatched hanger on his side of the closet! 😉

I can’t complain, this gave us all a plentiful supply of plastic hangers to choose from.  There are enough hangers for everyone!  Part of me is a little jealous that I had not done this first.  I really want to try out the new velvet hangers but think I missed my opportunity.  We have so many plastic hangers now that I would feel guilty not using them and for spending money on more hangers.

I haven’t found the hanger that speaks to me yet, but I do have one prized hanger.  It’s a hanger that my grandmother made.  It’s a wire hanger wrapped in a lavender and yellow material. I love it because she made it and I cherish everything she has ever made for me!

The hanger has evolved a lot during my lifetime.  I can remember only having the traditional wire hanger, then the plastic coated wire hanger and now plastic hangers.  Of course there are wood hangers and metal hangers, but my closets have seen very limited use of these.  Granted I do have a variety of hangers in my closet, but I’ve never settled on one particular hanger and swapped it out for every other hanger in my closet.  I’m sure I have hangers that are easily as old as I am and have traveled across country with me.

What is your favorite hanger?
